June 7-9, 2018, Birmingham

What can I expect at the Conference and how do I get the most out of it?
BIALL Conference 2018

On arrival

Collect your conference bag at the registration desk. This contains the full conference programme (including the exhibition plan), event tickets, and your name badge, which notes the parallel sessions you’ll be attending. The registration desk is usually in or outside the Exhibition hall and should be signposted from the venue reception area.

Navigate the programme

The 2.5 days of conference offers a diverse range of plenary and parallel sessions, giving you the opportunity to pick favourite sessions and enhance your professional development by exploring some new topics, or hearing from other sectors. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in sessions during the Q&A— chances are other delegates want to know too!

Visit the exhibition

Make sure you explore the exhibition and talk to the vendors. This is a great way to familiarise yourself with new products, changes to existing products and pick up useful information.

Striking up conversations on the exhibition stands will help you find out more about the companies behind the products and get to know key contacts. Why not play the Exhibition Passport game with a chance to win a great prize? It’s an excellent reason to visit all the stands and an easy way to break the ice with the vendors.

Many vendors will have their own raffles or competitions too so bring your business cards or use the blanks in the conference programme. Finally spare a thought for those colleagues you’ve left back in the office and pick up some goodies for them from one of the stands.

What to wear

Business casual is most common during the day, but jeans or a suit is also fine. You’ll be walking around the exhibition during the breaks so wear comfy shoes. Temperatures may vary between rooms so bring an extra layer just in case. Thursday evening is informal, so smart casual is fine (or there may be a theme!). On Friday night there is a formal dinner with awards, so evening dress is appropriate (black tie optional), but get ready to let your hair down on the dance floor later.

Meeting people

Don’t worry, most people get anxious in a conference setting. This is a great opportunity to talk to people from other sectors, so don’t just stick with people you know, try to make some new friends too – it can be surprisingly easy to strike up a conversation over biscuit choices in one of the refreshment breaks! Have a supply of business cards to pass to your new contacts so you can link up after the event.

Social media

Use the current conference Twitter hashtag eg #BIALL2018 to see what’s happening in other sessions or crowdsource information and add to your notes. Don’t forget to keep your devices on silent during the sessions to avoid distracting others. As the conference approaches, keep an eye on all our social media channels for posts about speakers, travel information, local history info or ideas of other things to do in our host city.
