Life Membership is awarded to current BIALL members who have had distinguished careers within Law Librarianship and been substantially involved with the activities of the association.

This year the award goes to an experienced legal information professional who worked at the Home Office Information and Library Service before joining their current library in 1993. He has been in his current, rather distinguished, academic post since 1996.

Despite a busy work life he has been consistently active in BIALL for a number of years. He hosted the inaugural Joint Study Institute in 1998, and has been a member of both the Conference and the Awards and Bursaries Committees in addition to being a member of the Adjudication panel for the Wallace Breem Memorial Award.

In 1999 he contributed 2 articles to the Law Librarian (the previous name for LIM) and also wrote a journal article on greater collaboration between law libraries for Amicus Curiae in the same year.

In 2010 he again wrote for LIM and also became President of the Association. In 2011, and whilst still serving as BIALL President, he became editor of Legal Information Management, a role he continues in today and has recently agreed to continue acting as editor for a further 3 years (at least!). This is a role requiring many skills and personal attributes. He has mastered the technique of cajoling busy people in a polite manner to submit to deadlines and is an ideas person but one who turns those ideas into reality whilst showing a real understanding of issues thrown up by the rapidly changing environment that is now the publishing world.

In addition, to fulfilling a number of the most time demanding roles in BIALL, he shows great enthusiasm for our profession and is a great advocate for law librarianship but never loses his sense of humour. He is a well-liked member of our community who offers encouragement and support for members to become involved with BIALL activities.

And so it gives me great pleasure to announce that David Wills, Squire Law Librarian and Acting Head of Collection Development & Description, University Library is the recipient of the BIALL Lifetime Membership Award 2017.
