BIALL Awards

Family Law, Lexis Nexis

Senior Editor Jonathan Cailes and Law Reporter Samantha Bangham to accepted the award on behalf of the publishers Lexis Nexis.

The winning title this year provides wide coverage of a fast moving legal topic, mixing the latest official guidance, in-depth case analysis and topical articles with columns from major groups and bodies. Authoritative and therefore invaluable to practitioners, the journal was commended by the judging panel for its currency, indexing, and clear and concise layout.

The 2017 BIALL Legal Journals Award goes to Family Law.

The Legal Journals Award was established in 2001 by BIALL’s Legal Information Group (LIG). From 2007 it became the responsibility of the Awards & Bursaries Committee (ABC) who now administer this prestigious award.

The award was previously known as the Serial Publication of the Year Award.

The aim of the Legal Journals Award is to reward the publishing profession for quality products and outstanding contributions in the field of legal serial titles whether online or in print.

The specific aims of the Legal Journals Award are to:

  • Recognise and reward excellence in legal serials publishing
  • Promote awareness of outstanding products
  • Encourage the highest quality of publishing
  • Set industry standards

The Legal Journals Award is presented annually and the winners receive a certificate. The winning publisher may use the specially designed logo on their journal product and their web-site. The award is presented at the BIALL Annual Dinner which takes place at the Annual Conference.

Nominations are invited in the spring of the award year through advertisements and via the BIALL website and e-mail list. Nominations are not accepted at other times.

The adjudication panel will consider criteria such as authority, scope of coverage, currency, layout, navigational aids, referencing, originality and value for money.

The Award Committee, who adjudicate on the nominations, is composed of BIALL members and invited guests representing many different sectors of the legal / legal information profession.

The Adjudication Panel for the Award is comprised of senior BIALL Officers including the President of the Association, the Hon Secretary and the Hon Treasurer, together with a representative from the Awards & Bursaries Committee and a representative from Wildy & Son Ltd.

2016: The Edinburgh Law Review, Edinburgh University Press

Professor Martin Hogg of the University of Edinburgh accepted the award for the Edinburgh Law Review from BIALL President, Karen Palmer, at BIALL’s First Night Dinner which took place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Dublin on the 9th June 2016.

2015: The Law Teacher, The International Journal of Legal Education

Matthew Derbyshire and Professor Nigel Duncan received the award from BIALL President, Marianne Barber, at the BIALL Annual Dinner which took place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole on Friday 12th June 2015.

2014: Legal Action

Val Williams and Louise Heath received the award from BIALL President, Jas Breslin, at the BIALL Annual Dinner which took place at the Royal Hall in Harrogate, on Friday 13 June 2014.

2013: Property Law Journal

Sadly Legalease were unable to attend the Award Dinner. Property Law Journal staff were delighted to hear of the Award and Tom Myatt said, “The award is a real honour and I am sure I speak for us all when expressing our sincerest thanks for the privilege.”

2012: Legal Action

Steve Hynes, Director of Legal Action received the award from the BIALL President, Susan Scorey at the BIALL Annual Dinner which took place at the Hastings Europa Hotel, Belfast on the 15th June 2012.

2011: New Law Journal

Caralyn Duignan, Regional Academic Account Manager, LexisNexis, accepted the award on behalf of NLJ editor Jon Miller, from The BIALL Predident, David Wills at the BIALL Annual Dinner at the Gateshead Newcastle Hilton.

2010: Common Market Law Review

Joyce Rivers, Marketing Director and Alison McDonnell, Editor received the award from the Daniella King, BIALL President at the BIALL Annual Dinner which took place at the De Vere Grand Hotel, Brighton on 11 June 2010.

2009: Estates Gazette

Yvonne Kirtlan, Legal Production Editor and Tina Desai, Senior Subeditor of Estates Gazette received the award from the BIALL President, Jackie Fishleigh at the BIALL Annual Dinner which took place at the Midland Hotel, Manchester.

2008: Criminal Law Week

James Richardson, founder and editor of Criminal Law Week, and Katherine Brewer, Publishing Manager received the award from the BIALL President, Barbara Tearle, at the BIALL Annual Dinner which took place at the Mansion House, Trinity College, Dublin.

2007: Family Law Journal

Elizabeth Walsh, the Editor of Family Law Journal, received the award from the BIALL President, Barbara Tearle, at the BIALL Annual Dinner which took place at Cutlers’ Hall, Sheffield on 15th June.

2006: New Law Journal

New Law Journal produced by Lexis Nexis Butterworths. The award was presented to Caroline Biesterfield of the NLJ editorial team.
